101- 1010611 Bob’s RGa 35/14

Number 101 was built specifically for my old friend Bob, and I have to say that I’m really pleased with the outcome. The  14 fret, RGa-35 acoustic has a Master Grade Englemann spruce top and Swietenia mahogany neck, back and sides. It has a similar 12th fret and headstock pearl inlay to the Bronzewing (No 89) and a similarly shaped bridge. The binding is makore and the bridge and headstock overlay are Australian lacewood.

The guitar is light, very responsive and LOUD! It has been set up with a low action and is a delight to play.

Bob recently informed me that his son Sam is now the new owner of what has to be one of the best of my small bodied acoustics built so far.

I have to approve because I know that Sam will do it justice!

imgp00041A Dreadnought very similar in construction to the “Dark Horse” and using Master grade Englemann spruce and top quality Indian rosewood back and sides.

Geoff McArthur and I go back a long way and we used to play together in the “Olden Days” when we were both much younger. Geoff seems to have developed quite a reputation as a songwriter and performer, as well as a mentor of future performers.

Anyway, I’ve been keen to make an instrument for Geoff for years and I’m delighted that he’s finally decided to allow me to do something about it! The inlay designs on the fretboard and headstock, as well as the unique bridge design, are as a result of a red or two we shared out in the workshop…

86:- 860709- Paul’s “Dark Horse” Dreadnought. (2009)

The Dark Horse Dreadnought is for Paul Mah,graphic designer, singer/ songwriter and the man behind Goodbye Stereo.

This guitar has been designed by Paul, but construction is based very largely on the “Prototype” guitar and is very Martin-like in concept. This guitar uses a Master Grade Engelmann spruce top and best quality East Indian rosewood for back and sides. The neck is laminated swietenia mahogany. We’ve used Schaller machine heads for the slotted headstock and the pickup system is the LR Baggs M1 soundhole pickup through a Baggs Para acoustic DI box.

The resulting instrument really is sensational, both in appearance and sound quality, due in no small part to a little advice from friend and colleague David Churchill, clearly one of Australia’s foremost acoustic guitar builders…

After a number of acoustics, I’ve been asked to make a couple of Dreadnought- style instruments and I’ve been very impressed with a Martin D18 and an old (mid 60s) Gibson Country Western acoustic that came into my workshop for some minor work. Why then, would I not take the best characteristics from the Martin and the Gibson and adapt them to a prototype to test the concept?

And the result? Not bad at all!

This guitar was purchased by Liam Weightman August, 2009.

83: – 830708 – The DS 2 Model (2008)

This guitar follows on from the “electric/ acoustic” concept of 81 0208 and was made to David Stephen’s specifications. The guitar is made of swietenia mahogany using the construction method first used 18 years ago on a semi-solid silver ash 12 string and used also on successive semi-solids that have the internal chambering bandsawn before the gluing on of the top and back. The top on this instrument is highly figured quilted maple with herringbone and w-b-w ivoroid binding and binding was also used on the front, back, neck and headstock. A WAS 5 pickup system is used and 18:1 Grover machine heads fitted.

The guitar is an adaptation of the Gibson “Chet Atkins” solid acoustic concept made from swietenia mahogany with tone chambering and fitted with a WAS 3 pickup and preamp. However, with no information on the construction or chambering, the design was discussed with Sid West (West Active Systems) and Barry Kerr of Woodtone Guitars and the design evolved into a hollowed out solid body with 15mm thick sides and a 7mm top and back, all mahogany construction with the spruce top essentially for appearance only.

This guitar now belongs to John Sullivan.

This guitar was made from a design from Stewart McDonald by John Bogdanovich and supposedly based on Andre Segovia’s 1930s instrument. The top is AAA Western Red cedar from Stewmac and the back and sides are of East Indian rosewood purchased in 1995. The neck is made of swietenia mahogany from AFT. The fingerboard is black ebony. Grover classical tuners are used.

Acoustic with cutaway, a spruce top and African mahogany back and sides. The African mahogany used proved difficult to bend, possibly because the timber was not straight grained, but the end result proved to be most satisfactory.

Small-bodied acoustic with spruce top and African mahogany back and sides, made as a demo guitar. The headstock is usual “Richards” shape but inlaid with MOP urn and foliage inlays. The body uses cream- black-cream ivoroid binding and on the top, herringbone binding and sound hole inlay. Although the wood for this instrument was machined in January, 2007, it wasn’t completed until the 4th of January, 2008.

Same as No. 69, but with spruce top and blackwood back and sides, made for Leigh Mullen, Roper River, on the Gulf of Carpentaria, NT. The instrument was sent by mail to Darwin and including shipping costs and insurance, cost $1750.00. Before shipping, the guitar lived inside for some 7-10 days and showed no movement in the timber or any tendency to go out of tune. This guitar was fitted with Sid West’s new WAS3 pickup system. On completion, the guitar was shown to a number of customers and generated a number of orders. From my point of view, this guitar has to be the best acoustic made to date! There is much to be said for not trying to reinvent the wheel.
